Harpy

My heart is harrowed by strange thoughts
Of horrid things on high:
A black-plumed harpy tears men’s eyes,
Then licks its woman fingers dry!—
Oh that it might be claws that bear
That dripping gore upon a tree:
For far more terrible ‘tis to watch
Men’s hearts held easily as tea,
By ladies’ hands, so carefully.

Beautiful imagery! So true, I think, that physical pain is less severe than heartbreak or the anxiety of not knowing whether one’s affection is returned. So good!
